What I Should Have Said

‘You do fine work Mr. Brown; you’re a true artisan.’ Customers have said something to that effect for every project. It took me thirty years but I finally figured out how to respond to praise for a good job. I always got a strange feeling; I should be proud of my work, right? I should say something akin to “Thank you, I do my best”. I meant it, sincerely, but that always felt hollow and somehow wrong. At 4:30 this morning God felt the need to wake me up and bring it to my attention My first sentiment was Couldn’t it wait till, you know, actual morning? But I am his subject and He is never wrong. Besides, it felt so good to finally know what to say. So, if I could do those moments over, I would say: “Thank you. It’s my hands that make it, it’s my mind that sees it before it is, but where did they come from? I have 'talent on loan from God', though it is through a glass, dimly. I will never be able to transform something dead into something beautiful like He can. I hope this piece will forever be a reminder of His redemptive power.”
